Ride Smart, Ride Safe: Tackling Malaysia's Motorcycle Safety Challenge

In Malaysia, motorcycles are more than just a means of transportation — they’re a way of life. With more than 16 million registered motorcycles on the road, they provide affordable transportation in both crowded cities and rural areas. But behind that convenience lies a pressing problem: Motorcycle accidents account for more than 60% of the country’s road fatalities.

What’s the problem?
A combination of high traffic density, unpredictable road conditions, and risky riding behaviors like speeding, lane drifting, and riding without proper safety equipment.

At the core of this challenge is a goal: saving lives

That’s why we’re implementing solutions that empower both riders and governments. Let’s make Malaysia’s streets safer — for every rider, every day.

  • Works with all sizes of motorcycles, scooters and tricycles, including small capacity bikes.
  • Provides real-time alerts
  • Integrates with mobile devices to provide post-ride feedback

Three tiered design

  • Easily installed hardware monitors the surrounding roadway and alerts the rider of unsafe conditions
  • A mobile app provides post-ride feedback to help improve rider safety
  • A data-centric, AI-Driven Total Fleet Safety Management system that assesses individual and fleet risk and provides appropriate feedback to riders and fleet managers

Dr. Rich Hanowski CEO, Senior Research Scientist:

“ Approximately 30% of global road deaths involve motorcycles. In developing nations, that number can eclipse 70%. There is an overwhelming need for aftermarket motorcycle safety technology that has been scientifically validated and is affordable. To meet this need, we present the Motorcycle Collision-Alert and Management Systems (MCAMS).”

Collision alerts: early warning system with visual display

While driving, Ridehawk provides the rider with visual alerts in case an obstacle is present it the path the bike is on. The alert is calculated on the Time to Collision calculation embedded in the system and gives the rider the opportunity to take evasive action.

Behaviour monitoring: Driving style analysis (e.g. abrupt braking, cornering behaviour)

The way a biker rides directly impacts not only the wear and tear of the motorbike, but it also indicates if a driver is risk averse or aggressive rider. Companies want to take action and the analysis of each rider in terms of their riding style allows them to do so.

Risk reports: Regular reports & recommendations

To manage resources, train staff, and assess adherence to safety protocols, these need to be measured. First and foremost, RideHawk assesses the driving behaviour of riders in terms of their safety. Those found to be exhibiting risky behaviour on the road can be coached and managed in the respective areas found needing improvement.

Cloud integration: data access in real time

Fleet managers need to make decisions based on real time. And for their entire fleet. RideHawk integrates with existing Fleet Management Systems, making the data and insights available via cloud computing. This allows for resource planning, route scheduling and assessment of safety risks at all times.
