American companies develop motorcycle safety systems, seeing business opportunities in legal reforms

Motorcycle Safety Solutions, a US company that develops motorcycle collision warning management systems, is considering a full-scale expansion into Malaysia, where many motorbike riders live. The country is considering expanding the accident insurance (workmens accident compensation insurance) system for company employees to include those outside of working hours, and the company expects increased demand for labor management. Motorcycle Safety Solutions motorcycle collision warning and management system, RideHawk, is similar to collision avoidance technology in cars. It detects stopped vehicles and debris ahead and alerts the driver with a display and a warning sound if there is a risk of collision. It also has GPS and acceleration measurement capabilities, and drivers can sync with their smartphones to view driving data. Currently, a pilot project is being carried out in Malaysia with 32 participants. The project will last for three months, with one month of drivers driving data being recorded and the remaining two months of the RideHawk being used to evaluate how the drivers driving patterns and skills have changed. The company expects to launch the service in Malaysia in August. It expects ridehailing giant Grab, food delivery service Foodpanda, and postal and logistics company Pos Malaysia (POS) to be among its potential customers. The monthly subscription will cover the costs of hardware, data, and updates.

The company plans to partner with a local manufacturer in Malaysia to produce the product locally. Initially, the company will produce 500 units per year. It will have trained mechanics who can install the system on each motorcycle in one to one and a half hours. Motorcycle Safety Solutions founder and CEO Rich Hanowski said motorbikes are involved in 70 percent of road fatalities in Malaysia and although drivers may ignore the warnings, he believes the system could help reduce them. Will a compensation system for accidents outside of working hours be introduced? In February of this year, Malaysias Ministry of Human Resources announced its intention to submit a bill to the federal parliament within the year that would expand the scope of coverage of the companies employee accident insurance (workmen compensation insurance) system. The ministry is currently drafting a bill to expand the scope of workers compensation insurance, which was previously limited to accidents that occur during working hours, to include accidents that occur domestically outside working hours. Hanowski explained that if the scope of coverage for workers compensation were expanded, companies would have to take responsibility for the safety of their employees not only during working hours but also after work. Ridehawk will help to protect the safety of employees," he said, expressing confidence in the growing demand. According to German research firm Statista, motorcycle sales are expected to reach 617,220 units in 2025. In terms of sales value, the market is expected to expand from RM3.69 billion (JPY1.26 billion) to RM4.36 billion between 2025 and 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.41% over the same period. Motorcycle sales are expected to reach 711,590 units in 2030.
